Lucas di Grassi on podium again in Monaco

15 May 2017

On clinching his 17th podium position in the 26th race, Lucas di Grassi has ensured that the title race in Formula E remains thrilling. In Monaco, in front of sold-out grandstands, the Brazilian celebrated second place. Daniel Abt, in position seven, completed the good team result for ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport. Next Saturday (20 May) the electric racing series will visit Paris.

Lucas di Grassi on podium again in Monaco

Spectators in the principality saw a continuation of the ‘eternal duel’ between leader of the standings Sébastien Buemi and Lucas di Grassi. The two rivals started the race side-by-side from the front row and, on seeing the chequered flag 51 laps later, were separated by merely three tenths of a second. Up to the last metre, the Brazilian from the German Team ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport had been looking for a way to overtake the defending champion, but then settled for the slightly smaller trophy.

His teammate Daniel Abt showed strong nerves in Monaco as well. Having started from position nine, the youngster kept a cool head in the commotion on lap one, stayed clear of trouble in his electric racing car, showed a strong overtaking manoeuvre and, on finishing in position seven, scored valuable points for the drivers’ and teams’ classifications.

After Monaco, with 21 podium places in the 26 races of the still young Formula E history to its tally, ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport continues to hold the record in the international field. The next Formula E race will be held next Saturday around the Dôme des Invalides in the heart of Paris. The winner of arch-rival Renault’s home round last year was Lucas di Grassi. That’s why team director Hans-Jürgen Abt is optimistic: “The ePrix today was a symbol of how the season has gone so far: Lucas and Sébastien thrill the crowd with one duel after the other – always tough, but always fair. I can promise all the fans that we’re going to continue exactly like this.”
